Registration now open!

May 25-28, 2016

Banff - Alberta - Canada

Dr. Edmond Lou and Dr. Eric Parent are honored to invite you to Banff, Alberta in Canada to participate in the 1ST Joint SOSORT-IRSSD education and scientific meeting to be held at The Banff Centre located in the Rocky Mountains. For the first time, clinicians and researchers from the Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT) and of the International Research Society on Spinal Deformities (IRSSD) will participate in a joint scientific meeting. The scientific meeting will be held from Wednesday May 25 to Saturday May 28, 2016 with a welcome reception on Tuesday May 24th. A pre-conference educational course on clinical scoliosis care (May 24th) and a post-conference research course (May 28th) will also be offered.

The Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT) was founded in 2004, and brings together scientists and clinicians focused on the conservative treatment of spinal deformities. SOSORT also led to the creation of the official journal of the society, the open BMC Scoliosis Journal ( SOSORT has also produced Consensus statements during many of the subsequent meetings on key topics including: bracing, exercises and reasons for justifying treatment. This year’s consensus will focus on updating the SOSORT guidelines on conservative treatment for scoliosis. Conferences are now held on the American continent every three years and in Europe otherwise. Recent SOSORT conferences were attended by representatives of 41 countries (Wiesbaden 2014) and 31 countries (Katowice 2015), respectively.

The International Research Society of Spinal Deformities (IRSSD) was established in 1994 to advance the study and research into Spinal Deformities for the public benefit. The object of the IRSSD is to provide a forum for the presentation and encouragement of research relating to spinal deformity and to disseminate the results of such research. The roots of the Society date to the early 1980’s and to the interest in Moire Topography to assess the trunk distortions associated with scoliosis. It grew to include the study of the three dimensional nature of the scoliotic spine and now encompasses all aspects of scoliosis from etiology to surgical outcomes. The Society meets every 2 years generally alternating between European and non-European venues.

Over the years many SOSORT and IRSSD members have been informally cooperating with overlapping memberships and some individuals serving on the Boards of both societies. This meeting, the 11th for both and our first joint meeting, offers an excellent opportunity to strengthen our collaborations.

In 2016, SOSORT will continue the tradition that began in Pozna? in 2006 as we offer the pre-conference educational session providing background knowledge on scoliosis and an overview of the various Scoliosis Specific Exercise approaches and bracing schools. Many internationally recognised lecturers contribute to the course. The course is meant for Physicians, Physical Therapists, Orthotists, Surgeons and clinical researchers on conservative care of spinal deformity. The first part of the course is relevant to all professions and during the last part of the course workshops will be offered for specifically for the different professions. Finally, to continue developing our clinical research capacity on conservative treatment, a third SOSORT research half-day course will be offered Saturday afternoon, May 28th 2016.

We are pleased to announce that Professor Yong Qiu, President of the Chinese Scoliosis Research Society and Dr Hubert Labelle, research chair in movement science at Hôpital Ste-Justine and chair of the SRS screening task force will provide keynote lectures. In Banff, during the scientific meeting, we will continue the tradition of a Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) Presidential Lecture and a presentation by the Chair of the Non-Operative Committee of the SRS.

SOSORT and IRSSD invite active participation not only of the experts from both Societies, but also of all scientists and professionals interested in achieving better outcomes for persons with spinal disorders.

We look forward to meeting you in Banff to engage in debates, attend scientific presentations, courses, social events and to relax in the Canadian Rockies.
